LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team turned in another impressive performance in an important NCAA Division II West Region victory on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles made a pair of first-half goals stand up in a 2-0 victory over Point Loma at Jesse Owens Track.
Joanna Espinoza and
Victoria Arredondo scored the goals for the Golden Eagles (4-0), who recorded their third shutout in four games.
Point Loma (1-2) applied better pressure in the second half, but the Sea Lions couldn't get one past Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Yi Du, who made a season-high six saves and lowered her goals against average to 0.25.
Cal State L.A. scored just five minutes into the game after getting off to a fast start.
Krystal Kutscher started the scoring play with a beautiful pass to
Andrea Lammers, who was able to flick the ball over onrushing Point Loma goalkeeper Lupe Herrera. It was unclear whether the ball would get into the net, but Espinosa erased all doubt by knocking it into the open goal.
The goal was Espinoza's second of the season.
The Golden Eagles continued to push the issue for the remainder of the first half and made it 2-0 on Arredondo's goal in the 38
th minute.
Amalia Arvidsson set up the play with a nice pass to Arredondo, who battled between a pair of Point Loma defenders and drilled a short-range shot off a diving Herrera's fingertips.
It was Arredondo's first goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 7-0 advantage in shots.
Point Loma had a much better second half and had a 7-3 edge in shots and Du was required to make a pair of outstanding saves. Point Loma's best chance probably came late in the game when Kelley Peterson had a good look from inside the box, but her shot went just wide.
Cal State L.A. finished the game with a 10-7 edge in shots, while Point Loma had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a game at California Baptist beginning at 3 p.m.
