Golden Eagles Stay Unbeaten With Double OT Win

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team was good until the final minute Wednesday and the Golden Eagles needed to be in order to remain unbeaten on the 2014 season.

The Golden Eagles (5-0) tied the game with a second-half goal from Jackeline Lopez and won it in the final minute of the second overtime on a goal by Amalia Arvidsson to beat California Baptist, 2-1. Cal State L.A. (5-0) also got an outstanding game from goalkeeper Yi Du, who made six saves, including a pair of crucial stops when the Golden Eagles trailed 1-0 early in the second period.

Lopez tied the game in the 75th minute with an assist from Heather Williams and Arvidsson knocked in the game-winner with an assist from Pablo.

The Golden Eagles had just missed winning the game moments earlier when Heather Williams sent a shot from close range just over the crossbar, but the Golden Eagles quickly regained possession after a goal kick and set up the winning play. Norie Pablo gained possession and dribbled toward the middle of the field when she sent a perfectly-placed pass to Arvidsson. The senior forward eluded the Lancer defense and fired a clear shot into the goal for the game-winner with 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

It was a well-deserved result for the Golden Eagles, who enjoyed a 22-15 advantage in shots, including an 11-6 edge in the second half and a 3-0 advantage in the second overtime period. Williams was a constant threat in the game and had a match-high six shots.

Cal State L.A. fell behind when Cal Baptist (2-3) scored on a rebound goal in the final 20 seconds of the first half. Chaylin Couzens knocked in the rebound of a shot by Kailey Nishimura. Du was able to make a diving deflection of Nishimura's shot, but Couzens was all alone to put in the rebound.

The Golden Eagles then weathered some Cal Baptist attacks in the opening stages of the second half before momentum began to switch. The Golden Eagles were slowed down by a pair of offside calls, the second of which negated an apparent game-tying goal.

Moments later, though, Williams sent a nice pass  to an onrushing Lopez, who shot from an angle in the box just inside the far post to tie it.

Both teams battled evenly through much of the game and Cal Baptist had some looks in the first overtime period before Cal State L.A. generated some heavy pressure late in the second overtime and eventually got the game-winner from Arvidsson.

Cal State L.A. returns to action on Saturday with a game at Azusa Pacific at 11 a.m.
