AZUSA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw its unbeaten start to the 2014 season come to an end Saturday in a tough 2-1 defeat to Azusa Pacific.
The Golden Eagles took a first-half lead thanks to a goal from
Candice Holt, but the Cougars got the equalizer less than a minute later and the game-winner in the 79th minute to post a 2-1 victory.
Cal State L.A. (5-1) allowed two goals in a game for the first time this season and lost to the Pacific West Conference pre-season favorite. The Golden Eagles tied the program record for most consecutive wins to open a season set originally by the 2009 team that also dropped its sixth game of the year.
Cal State L.A. had a 15-11 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Yi Du had four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Sarah Klinkenberg made five saves for Azusa Pacific (2-4). The Cougars opened the season with close losses to Sonoma State, Cal State Stanislaus, Western Washington and UC San Diego, but have rebounded to win their last two games.
The Golden Eagles had opened the season with five wins against Pacific West Conference opponents, including the teams rated second (California Baptist), third (Point Loma) and fourth (Dixie State) in the pre-season poll.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Holt received a pass from
Joanna Espinoza and fired a shot from close range into the net for the first goal of her Cal State L.A. career.
The Cougars, though, tied it less than a minute later following a Cal State L.A. foul. Mayra Almazan knocked in a shot from 20 yards out on the free kick to tie the game.
The score remained tied until late in the second half. Alyx Williams got the game-winner with an assist from Cassidy Burt on a left-footed shot from the top of the box.
Cal State L.A. pushed to equalize, but was unable to tie the score. The Golden Eagles had the final three shots of the game.
Veronika Steen had a shot saved in the 84th minute,
Victoria Arredondo had a free kick saved moments later and Espinoza sent a shot wide with four minutes remaining. That was the final shot attempt of the game by either squad.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Monday with a non-conference road game at California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent UC San Diego.
