LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team could certainly say it had its shot at a victory Monday night at UC San Diego.
In fact, the Golden Eagles fired off an incredible 31 of them against the Tritons in a 1-1 tie at Triton Soccer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (5-1-1) settled for a draw in its final non-conference contest, this one a battle between California Collegiate Athletic Association foes who will meet again in Los Angeles later this week.
Cal State L.A. scored its only goal just 40 seconds into the game on a successful penalty kick by
Amalia Arvidsson. UC San Diego (3-2-1) equalized on a direct kick goal by Michelle Yasutake in the 13th minute and that was the end of the scoring.
It wasn't for a lack of effort, though. The Golden Eagles hit the crossbar three times in the first half and once more in the second half and had all six shots in the second overtime period as they tried to put in the game-winner.
For the game, Cal State L.A. had a 31-15 edge, including an 11-8 edge in the first half and a 12-5 advantage in the second half. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Yi Du had five saves, while UC San Diego's Kelcie Brodsky had 13.
Shea Richards had seven shots in the game for the Golden Eagles, including five on goal.
Heather Williams had six shots, while Arvidsson and
Norie Pablo had four shots each.
After giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead, Arvidsson nearly made it 2-0, but struck the crossbar in the 11th minute. Williams hit the crossbar in the 32nd minute and Richards had a shot strike the bar in the 44th minute.
Pablo knocked another shot off the crossbar in the second half.
The Golden Eagles also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, although neither team managed a corner kick in the two overtime periods.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with its conference opener against UC San Diego at 7 p.m.
