Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had to wait out a lengthy rain delay before the game even started and then survive a scary ninth-inning before securing a win Sunday.
The Golden Eagles carried a 5-0 lead into the ninth inning and then had to hold on for a 5-3 victory over Cal State Stanislaus in the opener of what will now be an abbreviated three-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series. Cal State L.A. (7-8, 5-4 CCAA) got eight shutout innings from
Brandon Quintero and
Greg Humbert in the win.
The game was originally supposed to start at 2 p.m., then 4 p.m., then 5 p.m. and finally 5:30 p.m. because of the rains that have hit Southern California over the past three days. When the field was finally playable, the Golden Eagles and Warriors finally got the series underway.
Quintero was outstanding while improving his record to 2-3. He blanked Cal State Stanislaus on just three hits over six outstanding innings. He walked four and struck out a season-high 10.
Humbert came on and pitched two hitless innings with one strikeout.
The Golden Eagles carried a 5-0 lead into the ninth, but the Warriors bunched together a pair of hits and two walks to slice the lead to 5-3 before Casillas came on with the tying run at the plate and struck out the final batter.
Manny Acosta had a pair of hits and two RBI to lead a nine-hit Cal State L.A. attack.
Cody Doyle also had two hits and two runs scored.
Both teams struggled in the conditions and combined for six errors.
Jeremy McDonald went four innings for the Warriors and gave up seven hits and four runs. He walked two and struck out nine. Donnie Fairchilds went four innings of relief and gave up only two hits and one run.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring double by
Kyle Peralta that scored Doyle, who reached on a two-out walk.
Cal State L.A. extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth on a run-scoring double by
Casey Ryan and a two-run double off the right-centerfield wall by Acosta.
The Golden Eagles made it 5-0 in the seventh when
Jesus Cuevas reached on an error with one out that scored Doyle from third.
Cal State Stanislaus scored three times in the ninth on a run-scoring double by Skippy Ferreria, a balk and a run-scoring groundout by Stevie Robinson. After Colton Beatty drew a walk, Casillas came on and got the final out for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. and Cal State Stanislaus will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 11 a.m.
