Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES – After taking a hard-fought battle in the opener of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, Cal State L.A.'s baseball team certainly had its sights set on a sweep against a talented Chico State squad.
Those hopes were dashed early, though, and the Golden Eagles had to settle for a split. Cal State L.A. won the opener, 7-4, behind an outstanding complete-game performance from
Brandon Quintero, but Chico State scored six runs in the first inning of the nightcap and went on to a 9-0 victory in the nightcap.
Quintero wobbled a bit in the fourth inning of the opener, giving up four runs, but he was masterful before and after the inning for Cal State L.A. (11-13, 9-9 CCAA). He didn't allow a hit over the final five innings and breezed to his third win of the season.
In the nightcap, Chico State's Brad Lohse was just as masterful, tossing a seven-inning five-hit shutout to give the Wildcats (15-5, 7-4 CCAA) the split and a 2-1 lead in the series. He was backed by six runs in the opening inning and only allowed one base runner to reach third base in the game while improving to 4-0 on the season.
Manny Acosta had three hits in the opener for Cal State L.A., which banged out 13 hits.
Trent Zaks was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI,
Drew Vanisi was 2-for-4 with two RBI and
Kyle Peralta was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Eric Angerer had two of the Wildcats' four RBI in the game. Peter Miller and Cody Slader also drove in runs.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Niko Garcia doubled in
Rodrigo Martinez to give Cal State L.A. a 1-0 lead in the second and a two-run double by Zaks highlighted a three-run third inning.
Chico State evened it with four runs on four hits in the fourth inning, but the Wildcats didn't manage a hit the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. took the lead for good in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Peralta and made it 7-4 with two more runs in the sixth. Vanisi singled up the middle to drive in one run and
Casey Ryan singled in the other.
Chico State wasted little time grabbing control of the nightcap. Chico State, after the leadoff batter was retired, strung together seven hits for six runs. Tyler Madrid had a two-run triple to open the scoring, Jeffrey Ortega had a run-scoring single, Peter Miller had a two-out single to make it 4-0, Blake Walker had a run-scoring double and Miller later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.
That was all the run support Lohse needed. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five.
Ryan Keller, after the rocky first inning, settled down and blanked the Wildcats until the fifth when he tired and walked a pair of batters.
Adan Cabrales finished up and allowed three hits and one earned run over the final three innings.
Vanisi had two of the Golden Eagles' five hits in the nightcap.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the series with a single game against Chico State at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
