Golden Eagles Roughed Up In Opener At Monterey Bay

Box Score SEASIDE – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was roughed up in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles surrendered five runs with two outs in the bottom of the first and things never got better in a 19-4 loss to the Otters on Friday. Cal State L.A. (4-7, 2-3 CCAA) managed nine hits and single runs in the second, third, sixth and eighth innings.

Cal State Monterey Bay (4-8, 1-4 CCAA) scored 13 runs in the first five innings and 12 of them were scored with two outs.

Niko Garcia was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Golden Eagles, while Cody Doyle and Drew Vanisi each drove in one run.

Richie Johnson and Jared Snow had three RBI each for the Otters.

The four-game series pits the 2013 regular-season CCAA champions (Cal State Monterey Bay) and CCAA Tournament Champion (Cal State L.A.). The two programs took turns eliminating the other from postseason competition a year ago. The Golden Eagles eliminated the Otters in the CCAA Championship Tournament on their way to the title, while Cal State Monterey Bay knocked the Golden Eagles out of the NCAA Tournament.

Brandon Quintero started for the Golden Eagles and went 3 2/3 innings. The Otters loaded the bases on a pair of infield singles and a walk in the first inning and before Quintero could get the third out, five runs had scored. A two-run double by Johnson was the big hit of the inning.

Travis Hawley pitched the next 3 1/3 innings for the Golden Eagles and Chris Oropesa pitched the eighth inning.

The Golden Eagles got on the board in the second inning when a sacrifice fly by Vanisi drove in Trent Zaks. A run-scoring double by Doyle in the third inning drove in Manny Acosta.

A run-scoring double by Garcia in the sixth inning drove in Jesus Cuevas and a run-scoring single by Garcia in the eighth inning drove in Kevin Fontana.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay beginning at 11 a.m.
