Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its 2014 season off to a tough start with a pair of lopsided losses to California Baptist Saturday at Totman Stadium.
The Golden Eagles, the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament champions, were beaten 12-1 in the opener of a doubleheader and then fell to the Lancers in a nine-inning nightcap, 10-2.
The Golden Eagles managed only five hits in the opener and
Kyle Peralta scored the only run in the third inning. He doubled, took third on a groundout by
Andrew Montanari and scored when
Trent Zaks reached on an error. That tied the game at 1-1, but the Lancers scored four times in the fouirth and five times in the seventh to break it open.
Sophomore
Brandon Quintero got the start for the Golden Eagles and gave up 10 hits and five runs.
Jordan Cavazos gave up 10 hits and five earned runs in three innings and
Shawn Meusborn allowed a run in his one inning of work.
Things didn't much better for the Golden Eagles in the nightcap. The Lancers took a 9-0 lead after four innings and the Golden Eagles managed only seven hits.
Cody Doyle was 3-for-3 with a double and both RBI for the Golden Eagles.
Rodrigo Martinez scored both Cal State L.A. runs.
Ryan Keller pitched five innings and gave up nine hits and six earned runs.
Reed Reznicek and Jordan Hawley pitched scoreless innings and
Chris Oropesa allowed one run in his one inning of work.
Cal State L.A. will play its 2014 home opener on Monday night against California Baptist at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
