Golden Eagles Claim CCAA Tourney Championship

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS

TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team made sure it had a second conference championship banner to take back to campus.

The Golden Eagles, the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season champions, claimed the CCAA Championship Tournament title as well after a 3-1 win over Chico State Sunday at Cal State Stanislaus' Warrior Stadium. Cal State L.A. (16-1-3) ran its unbeaten streak to 14 games with an impressive performance in the title game. The Golden Eagles got first-half goals from Danielle Telles, Heather Williams and Andrea Lammers and made them stand up against a talented Chico State squad that made it interesting all the way to the end.

Cal State L.A. won its second conference tournament title and its first since 2009.

Cal State L.A. will now look forward to the announcement for the NCAA Division II championship field that will be broadcast on Monday at 4 p.m. on www.ncaa.com. The Golden Eagles claimed the CCAA's automatic bid and were the No. 2 team in the region in the most recent regional rankings. The Golden Eagles are also ranked No. 6 in the nation.

The Golden Eagles were able to claim both CCAA championships thanks to a new format this season. The conference switched to a single-table format this season with each conference school playing each conference opponent one time with the top six seeds advancing to the conference tournament. The Golden Eagles claimed the regular-season championship and then also won the tournament to claim both banners.

Cal State L.A. had an 11-6 advantage in shots, while Chico State (12-5-2) had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Wildcats entered the CCAA tourney as the No. 2 seed and as the No. 7-ranked team in the West Region.

The game featured four outstanding goals in the first 28 minutes of the game -- three of them for Cal State L.A. - and then nothing in the final 62 minutes.

Telles got the game's first goal in the 10th minute with a tremendous shot from about 25 yards out that found the far corner of the net. She completed a nice give-and-go with Amalia Arvidsson, who hit Telles right in stride for the dramatic shot. It was the first career for Telles, a sophomore defender.

Then, moments later, Yi Du made a key play to prevent a Chico State goal that would have tied the game. Chico State's Megan Tabler sent in a dangerous ball off a free kick and Du was able to leap and bat the ball out of the box just before a Chico State player could get a head on it.

Cal State L.A. then made it 2-0 in the 14th minute with a spectacular goal from Williams. She received a clearing pass from Candice Holt right around midfield and dribbled toward the Chico State goal. She cut to her right, split a pair of defenders to get into the box and then fired a shot just inside the far post for her sixth goal of the season.

Chico State responded with a spectacular goal of its own just six minutes later. Pooja Patel got free down the right side and sent in a cross that found Stephanie Vaquerano, who was able to volley a shot with her left foot from point-blank range and into the net.

Cal State L.A., though, restored its two-goal advantage with another beautiful goal. Williams started the play deep in Chico State territory with a pass to Jackeline Lopez, who sent a pass to Arvidsson. Arvidsson, who scored all three goals in a 3-0 win over Sonoma State in the semi-finals on Friday, sent in a cross to the middle of the box. Lammers raced in and lined it into the goal just under the crossbar for her fifth goal of the season.

Arvidsson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after having three goals and two assists in the two games. Justine Telles, who has been outstanding all season, was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Williams, Danielle Telles, Du and Alicia Gutierrez also earned All-Tourney honors.
