Golden Eagles Fall Short In NCAA Playoff Game

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw the end of a program-record unbeaten streak come to an end at a most inopportune time.

The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the nation and owners of the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season and tournament championships, were unable to fire on all cylinders and fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Track in an NCAA Division II West Region second-round match. The Golden Eagles (16-2-3) were seeded No. 2 in the region. The region's top seed, Western Washington, also fell on Saturday, 1-0, to No. 4 seed Cal State Stanislaus.

Cal State L.A. lost for the first time since Sept. 20 and were blanked for just the second time this season. The Golden Eagles also lost for the first time this season to a conference opponent after going 11-0-3 in 14 previous games this season.

Cal State L.A. was hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the third time. The Golden Eagles won a second-round match against Seattle Pacific, 2-1, in 2011 and lost to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, in 2009, also as conference champions.

The Golden Eagles, who scored six goals in two games while winning the conference tournament title last week, simply never got untracked on Saturday. Cal State L.A. had a 15-11 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in the first half, but only a few were high-quality chances against Cal Poly Pomona's stingy defense. Likewise, Cal Poly Pomona had trouble generating quality chances against Cal State L.A.'s nationally-ranked defense, but the Broncos were able to convert in the 74th minute on an unassisted goal by Melissa Martinez.

The Golden Eagles, who hadn't trailed in a match since a 2-1 loss at Azusa Pacific on Sept. 20, were unable to find the equalizer down the stretch as Cal Poly Pomona (15-5-1) defended well.

Cal Poly Pomona Ricki Ives made nine saves, including a brilliant save on a header by Joanna Espinoza late in the first half. She also made a diving stop of a bid by Andrea Lammers moments before.

Yi Du had four saves for the Golden Eagles.

Amalia Arvidsson, who tied a program record with 14 goals this season, had a game-high four shots, but Ives made saves on three of her attempts. Justine Telles had a strong all-around game and had three shots, while Lammers and Jackeline Lopez had two shots each.

Cal State L.A. set several program records this season, including achieving its highest national ranking at No. 5. The Golden Eagles set new program standards for most shutouts (13), consecutive shutouts (8), fewest goals allowed (10) and longest unbeaten streak (14). Arvidsson tied the single-season mark for goals also held by Liz Franco and AnnMarie Tangorra in 2010. Du set new marks for lowest goals against average (0.46) and most shutouts (13).
