Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Bow Out Of Playoffs On Late Goal

SEATTLE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had its share of late-game goals during its championship season, but the Golden Eagles saw their 2014 campaign end in exactly that fashion Saturday night in an NCAA Division II national quarterfinal match.

The Golden Eagles, who captured the NCAA Division II West Region championship on an overtime goal on Thursday, fell victim to a goal by Colorado Mesa in the 88th minute of a 1-0 loss at Interbay Stadium. Cal State L.A. (15-4-2) was making its second appearance in the national quarterfinal round in the past four seasons and found similiar heartbreak. The Golden Eagles had a 23-12 advantage in shots, but could not get one past the Colorado Mesa defense.

Colorado Mesa (18-3-1), the South Central Region champions, advance to the College Cup in Louisville, Ky. for a national semi-final matchup with No. 1 Charleston. Colorado Mesa was ranked 11th in the nation, while Cal State L.A. was 14th.

"I thought it was a hard-fought game; they started the game very fast and I thought we weathered the storm and fought our way back into the match," Cal State L.A. head coach Chris Chamides said. "Unfortunately, we hit a post. I don't know if this was a game where there should have been a winner or loser, but we're certainly disappointed to not be advancing."

Although the Golden Eagles did enjoy the advantage in shots (23-12) and corner kicks (4-0), the game was evenly contested. Cal State L.A.'s Mike Beigarten made four saves, while Colorado Mesa goalkeeper Micah Conrads made two saves. The defensive expertise by both teams made quality chances few and far between.

The lone goal of the game came with just 2:16 remaining. Kevin Escobar sent a cross into the box that appeared to skip past two players and end up on the foot of Charlie Dukes, who was able to finish from point-blank range.

Colorado Mesa started quickly and had a golden opportunity in the third minute when a header from in close by Tim Hofer hit the post and Stevie Palma's header on the rebound sailed high.

Cal State L.A. began to generate some possession wound up with a 10-6 edge in shots in the opening half.

The Golden Eagles had a good chance in the 58th minute when a pass from Jordan Payne got through to Halil Tozar, whose shot sailed wide.

Then, in the 70th minute, Marvin Iskra had a curving shot from just outside the box hit the far post and stay out. Sigifredo Torres had a strong chance in the 83rd minute off a corner kick by Herbert Biste, but that, too, went wide.

The game seemed destined to go into overtime, but Colorado Mesa converted on its opportunity in the 88th minute and a late bid by Tozar in the final minute was just high.

Iskra had a match-high eight shots, while Tozar had five shots.

"When you go 15-4-2 and you're the West Region champs, you have to be pleased with how your season went and our boys fought hard all season," Chamides said. "We're obviously disappointed, but our guys will pick up their heads and be proud of what they accomplished."

Cal State L.A. set new program records with 13 shutouts and only nine goals allowed. The Golden Eagles entered Saturday's match leading the nation in goals against average.
