Box Score TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its four-game series with Cal State Stanislaus off to a good start thanks to another outstanding start from
Jordan Sechler and some timely two-out hitting.
Sechler carried a shutout into the ninth inning and the Golden Eagles scored all their runs with two outs in a 7-0 win over the Warriors at Warrior Field. Cal State L.A. (12-8, 10-3 CCAA) had 11 hits in the game and scored all its runs after two were out. The Golden Eagles scored six times in the fourth and once in the fifth.
James Wharton had two hits, including a two-run home run, while
Niko Garcia had two hits and a two-run single.
Ryan Cooperstone had two hits and a run scored, while
Cody Doyle also had a pair of hits.
Sechler wound up going 8 2/3 innings and surrendered eight hits and the two nine-inning runs. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven in a solid follow-up to his two-hit shutout last week against Cal State Monterey Bay that earned him CCAA and NCAA Division II West Region Pitcher of the Week honors.
Tim Vranau got the final out for the Golden Eagles on Friday.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Golden Eagles scored six times.
Tyler Christian reached on an error and took second on a wild pitch and
Manny Acosta was hit by a pitch.
Casey Ryan delivered a two-out single to drive in Christian with the game's first run.
Scott Masik followed with a run-scoring double to make it 2-0 and Garcia had a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 advantage. Wharton completed the rally with a two-run home run.
Cal State L.A. made it 7-0 in the fifth inning when
Ryan Cooperstone walked and scored on a run-scoring double by
Jeremy Weber.
Sechler retired the Warriors without a run until the ninth inning when Cal State Stanislaus struck for two runs. Vranau came on, surrendered a run-scoring single, and then got the final out on a fly out.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday in a doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus beginning at 11 a.m.
