Golden Eagles Get Second Straight Victory Over Coyotes

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got another pitching gem and some more timely hitting Friday night in a 7-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State San Bernardino.

David Armas allowed only five hits while tossing his first shutout of the season and Cal State L.A. (19-13, 16-6 CCAA) collected 13 hits to win its second straight game over the Coyotes (11-15, 5-13 CCAA) at Reeder Field.

The Golden Eagles maintained their hold on second place in the CCAA and are one-half game behind Chico State, which swept a doubleheader from San Francisco State earlier Friday.

Jeremy Weber had four hits to pace the offensive attack on Friday, while Scott Masik, James Wharton, Tyler Christian and Manny Acosta had two hits each. Wharton, Christian and Casey Ryan had two RBI each for the Golden Eagles.

Armas was masterful in his nine-inning performance. All five hits he allowed were singles and he gave up more than one hit in an inning only once. Armas retired the Coyotes in order in five of the nine innings and faced only three batters in another after getting a double play grounder.

Michael Castello had two hits for the Coyotes. Ken Kissell got the start and gave up five earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. Phil Gonzalez was effective in relief and blanked the Golden Eagles on one hit over 1 1/3 innings.

The Golden Eagles scored three times in the third inning to take the lead for good. Weber singled with one out and moved to third on a double off the right-field wall by Wharton. After Cody Doyle was intentionally walked to load the bases, Christian doubled to left to drive in two. Ryan Cooperstone added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Wharton hit a two-run double in the fourth to make it 5-0 and Ryan's sacrifice fly scored Niko Garcia in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 6-0.

Cal State L.A. got its final run in the seventh inning when Ryan's run-scoring single drove in Garcia.

Garcia and Weber both scored two runs for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the four-game series with Cal State San Bernardino with a doubleheader in San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field beginning at 11 a.m.
