Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State San Bernardino off to a good start.
The Golden Eagles got eight shutout innings from
Jordan Sechler and went on to a 9-0 win over the Coyotes Thursday night at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (18-13, 15-6 CCAA) collected 14 hits against three Cal State San Bernardino pitchers.
Sechler had another outstanding effort for the Golden Eagles and improved to 5-1 on the season. He allowed only three hits – all singles – and did not walk a batter while striking out nine.
Yuki Onodera worked a scoreless ninth inning for the Golden Eagles.
Cody Doyle had four hits for Cal State L.A., while
Scott Masik,
Jeremy Weber,
James Wharton and
Niko Garcia had two hits each.
Cal State San Bernardino (11-14, 5-12 CCAA) got singles from Remington Miller, Richard Mount and Christian Gomez against Sechler, while Billy Hamilton picked up a pinch-hit single in the ninth off of Onodera.
Cal State L.A. got some early run support for Sechler, scoring three runs in the first innings and two more in the second to take a quick 5-0 lead. The Golden Eagles completed their scoring with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Masik opened the first for the Golden Eagles by getting hit by a pitch and Weber drew a walk. Wharton followed with a double to center to score Masik and Weber scored on a single by Doyle. Wharton scored on a double-play ball.
Cal State L.A. tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the second inning. Garcia singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored when
Manny Acosta reached on a throwing error. Acosta later scored on a run-scoring single by Weber.
The Golden Eagles added two more in the fifth inning to make it 7-0. Garcia drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Acosta singled in the other run.
Masik reached on a bloop double in the sixth and scored on a single by Weber. Cal State San Bernardino centerfielder Steven Chagolla made a strong throw to second and got Weber out trying to get a double.
Tyler Christian added a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday night with a game against Cal State San Bernardino at Reeder Field.
