LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team put itself in good position for a win over NCAA Division I Colorado State, but was unable to close well.
The Golden Eagles won two of the three doubles contests, but could manage only one point in singles and fell to Colorado State, 6-3, Saturday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (6-7), ranked 14th in the nation in NCAA Division II, was playing in its first match of the season against an NCAA Division I opponent.
Christie Lau was the only Golden Eagle to win in singles, taking a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Natalie Heffron. The other five singles matches were decided in straight sets in favor of Colorado State.
Lau and
Leora Hemmerich won the closest contest of the day, a 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles over Kendall Keitzner and Kaley Schultz.
Jill Sangria and
Tiffani Shaik prevailed at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, over Mollie Cooper and Abby Stevens.
The lone doubles point for Colorado State came at No. 3 doubles, where Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska defeated
Tiffany Leung and
Sydney Postal, 8-2.
Hemmerich lost to Stevens at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4; Shaik fell to Schulz, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, Sangria lost to Heitzner at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 6-4, Postal lost to Wojakowska at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4 and Leung lost to Cooper at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday, March 29, with a match against UC San Diego in La Jolla.
