Golden Eagles Complete Series Sweep Over CS Stanislaus

Box Score TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got another strong outing from its pitching staff and completed a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series sweep over Cal State Stanislaus.

The Golden Eagles limited the Warriors to just one run in the finale and beat Cal State Stanislaus, 8-1, Sunday at Warrior Field. Cal State L.A. (15-8, 13-3 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and completed its second series sweep in conference play. The Golden Eagles currently lead the conference.

James Wharton was 3-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season to pace the offensive attack. He also finished the game on the mound for the Golden Eagles, tossing a scoreless ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts. Tyler Christian had a two-run double and drove in three runs, while Jeremy Weber scored a pair of runs. Cal State L.A. broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the sixth inning.

Jordan Cavazos got the start for the Golden Eagles and pitched four scoreless innings. He allowed only two hits, walked one and struck out two. Sam Elgoual followed with three strong innings, allowing only two hits and one run. He walked three and struck out two. Elgoual got the win and improved to 2-0.

#Ryan Cooperstone,# in his first pitching performance of the season, worked a scoreless eighth inning and struck out two, while Wharton allowed just one single in the ninth and struck out two to complete the win.

Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Manny Acosta walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Casey Ryan. The Warriors tied it with a run in the fifth when Pete Pendley drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Golden Eagles then scored four times in the sixth to take the lead for good. Weber drew a one-out walk and took third on a double by Wharton. Cody Doyle drew a walk to load the bases and Christian followed with a two-run double to break the tie. Cooperstone had a run-scoring single to make it 4-1 and David Trejo contributed a two-out, run-scoring single to make it 5-1.

Scott Masik doubled and eventually scored on a single by Wharton in the seventh inning to make it 6-1 and Christian had a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 7-1.

Wharton his a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to complete the scoring.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday night with the opener of a four-game series against UC San Diego at Reeder Field.
