Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team came out on the winning end of a classic pitchers' duel thanks to a masterpiece from
Jordan Sechler Friday night in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Sechler allowed only two hits – both singles – and didn't walk a batter in an outstanding effort to lead the Golden Eagles to a 4-0 win over the Otters at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (10-6, 8-1 CCAA) picked up its second consecutive shutout victory and has won eight of its last nine games.
Cal State Monterey Bay (11-5, 6-3 CCAA) also got an impressive pitching performance from Chris Daniels, who scattered seven hits and walked one while allowing three runs over seven strong innings.
On this night, though, Sechler was in complete command. The Otters got a first-inning single from Victor Rasor-Thompson in the first inning and a one-out single by Jason Merjano in the third. The Otters had two on and one out in that inning following a Cal State L.A. error, but Sechler got the final two outs on a strikeout and fly out and didn't allow a hit the rest of the way.
Sechler (3-0), who struck out eight, retired the last 20 Cal State Monterey Bay hitters.
The Golden Eagles wound up with nine hits and executed well enough to score four times.
Cody Doyle was 2-for-4 with three RBI,
Scott Masik was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and
Jeremy Weber was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Masik reached on an infield single and
Casey Ryan followed with a single up the middle.
James Wharton sacrificed the runners over with a perfectly-placed bunt and Masik scored on a groundout by Doyle.
The Golden Eagles struck for two more runs in the sixth thanks in large part to a clutch double by Masik. Weber started the inning with a single and took third on Masik's double. Masik scored on a groundout by Ryan and Masik scored on a groundout by Doyle.
Cal State L.A. scored its final run in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Wharton and Doyle.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
