AZUSA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's team got off to a rocky start in doubles and never recovered in a non-conference loss Friday at Azusa Pacific.

The Golden Eagles lost all three doubles contests -- two of them in hotly-contested matches -- and Azusa Pacific went on to a 7-2 victory at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (4-3) is ranked 15th in the nation, while Azusa Pacific, a newcomer to the Pacific West Conference, improved to 7-2.

The tone for the match was set in doubles. Cal State L.A.'s Christie Lau and Leora Hemmerich fell at No. 1 doubles, 9-7, to Azusa Pacific's Emily Harris and Danae Ingwaldson, while Tiffani Shaik and Sydney Postal fell at No. 2 doubles, 9-8, to Azusa Pacific's Samantha Kaneta and Brejohn McCrary. Cal State L.A.'s Jill Sangria and Samantha Sismundo lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, to Lindsey Yeom and Kim Koetterheinrich.

Cal State L.A. got a win at No. 2 singles from Hemmerich, who recorded a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ingaldson and a come-from-behind win from Lau at No. 1 singles. Lau dropped the first set and then beat Harris, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Sangria lost to McCrary, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, Tiffany Leung lost at No. 5 singles to Yeon, 6-0, 6-3 and Sismundo lost at No. 6 singles to Koetterheinrich, 7-6, 6-1. Shaik dropped a tough match at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Saturday, March 2, with a home match against Sonoma State beginning at 11 a.m.
