Box Score POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team made sure the extra wait was well worth it on Friday.
The Golden Eagles got a go-ahead single from
Steven Luna and a two-run double from
Jeremy Weber as part of a four-run 15th inning and beat Cal Poly Pomona, 9-5, Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Assocation game at Scolinos Field. The game started on Thursday, but was halted after 13 innings because of darkness. The two teams will play a regularly-scheduled game later on Friday beginning a little after 2 p.m.
Cal State L.A. (7-5, 5-0 CCAA) started the game-winning rally when
Cody Doyle reached on an error to lead off the 15th inning.
Tyler Christian was hit by a pitch and
Ryan Cooperstone sacrificed the runners over. After
Manny Acosta was intentionally walked, Luna delivered a go-ahead single to center. Weber followed with a two-run double to right-center and
Scott Masik lined out to center for a sacrifice fly to make it 9-5.
James Wharton came in from first base to pitch the final two innings and picked up the win.
Jordan Cavazos did a fine job in relief on Thursday, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings to give the Golden Eagles an opportunity to win on Friday.
Cal State L.A. had a 17-10 advantage in hits and each team made a costly error. Masik had four hits, including a home run, while Acosta had three hits. Wharton, Doyle, Christian and Cooperstone had two hits each. Christian had three RBI, while Masik and Weber drove in two runs each.
Jordan Sechler had another outstanding start for the Golden Eagles, allowing only eight hits and two runs over nine innings. He walked one and struck out five and went a full nine innings for the second straight start.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 1-1 when Masik hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Cal State L.A. then took a 2-1 lead in the eighth on a two-out run-scoring single by Christian.
Sechler carried that lead into the ninth, but surrendered a double and a two-out single that tied the game at 2-2.
Cal State L.A. then gave itself another opportunity to win the game when the Golden Eagles scored three times in the 10
th. Masik and Wharton both singled and both eventually scored on a two-run single by Christian. Cooperstone followed with a run-scoring single to make it 5-2.
The Broncos, though, took advantage of a walk and two hit batters to load the bases with two outs and scored twice on an error that made it 5-4. Cal Poly Pomona then tied it at 5-5 on a single, but Ryan threw out the potential winning run at the plate to keep the game tied.
After today's second game, the series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at Cal State L.A.'s Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
