Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team enjoyed another strong start from senior
Jordan Sechler.
Sechler tossed his second straight complete game and led the Golden Eagles to a 9-2 win over San Francisco State Friday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both schools at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (3-5, 1-0 CCAA) broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth and then broke the game open with six runs in the eighth.
James Wharton hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, to highlight the three-run fifth inning.
Jeremy Weber also drove in a pair of runs and scored once, while Wharton and
Scott Masik had two hits each.
Grady Espinoza and Mark Lindsay drove in runs for San Francisco State (3-5, 0-1 CCAA). Zack Malik pitched 7 1/3 innings for the Gators and kept his team in the game. He gave up nine hits and four earned runs during his outing.
Sechler, meanwhile, was in command throughout, although the Gators threatened to erase a 3-0 deficit when they scored twice in the top of the eighth. Sechler, though, got out of the jam with a 3-2 lead by getting the final out of the inning on a fly to center.
Cal State L.A. then scored six times in the bottom of the inning and was helped by four San Francisco State errors.
Sechler allowed eight hits – seven of them singles – and didn't walk a batter. He struck out five.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Weber reached on a fielder's choice to drive in
Niko Garcia.
Casey Ryan moved Weber to second on a sacrifice and Wharton stretched the Golden Eagles' lead to 3-0 with his third home run of the season.
San Francisco State cut the deficit to 3-1 when Espinosa doubled in Jordan Mullins with one out and Lindsay delivered a two-out single to make it 3-2. Sechler then shut the door, though, and Cal State L.A. put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning.
Ryan Cooperstone singled in the first run and a second run scored on the play because of an outfield error. Weber drove in another run with a fielder's choice and the rest of the runs scored on San Francisco State miscues.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against San Francisco State beginning at 11 a.m. at Reeder Field.
