LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was locked up with Cal State Dominguez Hills in a game that wasn't a postseason battle, but sure felt like one Friday night at Jesse Owens Track.
Cal State L.A. got a second-half goal from Tobias Tobrant and made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over the Toros in an entertaining and well-played California Collegiate Athletic Association battle. The Golden Eagles (12-1-4, 10-1-4 CCAA) posted their sixth consecutive shutout and ran their unbeaten streak to 12 matches.
The Golden Eagles also got an unexpected bonus on Friday when the CCAA announced Cal State Monterey Bay had to forfeit three conference results, including a 1-1 tie with Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles' overall record is unchanged, but they will receive three points from that game because of the forfeit instead of one they had earlier received for the tie.
Therefore, Cal State L.A. now has 36 points and leads the CCAA South Division by one point over Chico State and UC San Diego and can wrap up the best record in the conference with a win at UC San Diego on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles certainly needed their 'A' game to get an important victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-5-3, 7-5-3 CCAA) in a matchup between two of the top six regionally-ranked teams. Cal State L.A., which is ranked No. 1 in the region, and Cal State Dominguez Hills, which is ranked No. 6 in the region, would both qualify for the NCAA Tournament if the season ended today. The top six teams will advance.
Cal State Dominguez Hills came out aggressively and had an 11-1 advantage in shots in the first half. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Mike Beigarten was sharp and made five of his six saves in the opening half, including a pair of spectacular stops.
He was able to make a diving save with his feet on a bid by Aaron Salazar in the 26th minute and he just got his fingertips on a shot by Jio Santana to deflect it just wide in the 43rd minute.
The Golden Eagles began generating some chances in an entertaining second half that featured good scoring opportunities for both sides. Cal State L.A.'s Abel Teferi and Sigifredo Torres had bids go just wide of the post in the first five minutes of the second period and Joshua Cortez sent a low liner through traffic that was saved by Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Trey Mitchell in the 66th minute.
Cal State L.A. picked up the only goal of the game in the 79th minute thanks to spectacular work by Tobrant. Oscar Carrillo started the play with a pass down the sideline and Daniel Rodriguez sent it quickly toward Tobrant, who was able to get to the ball before Mitchell and loft it over his head as the goalkeeper collided with a defender. The ball rolled into the goal and Tobrant picked up his fourth goal of the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had a late corner kick by Santana very nearly end up tying the game, but Dane Nielsen was able to clear away Alejandro Covarrubias' shot before it reached the goal with Beigarten out as time was winding down.
The Golden Eagles honored their five seniors -- Daniel Rodriguez, Juan Ochoa, Christhian Reyes, Oscar Carrillo and Silvano Lopez -- in pregame ceremonies.
Cal State L.A. will wrap up its regular season with a match at UC San Diego on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
