Golden Eagles Make Early Goal Stand Up In Shutout

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got an early first-half goal and made it stand up in a California Collegiate Athletic Association battle with Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday.

Tobias Tobrant scored his third goal of the season and the Golden Eagle defense held off persistent Cal State Stanislaus, 1-0, at Jesse Owens Stadium. The Golden Eagles, ranked 17th in the nation, won their third straight game.

Cal State L.A. (9-1-2, 7-1-2 CCAA) now has 23 points and moved up to second place in the CCAA South Division, just one point behind first-place Chico State. The top four teams in the division are separated by only four points.

The Golden Eagles had a 19-16 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Mike Beigarten made seven saves to post his fifth shutout and the team's sixth. Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper Clint Long made nine saves.

Cal State Stanislaus (4-7-1, 3-7-0 CCAA) tested the Golden Eagle defense repeatedly in the second half, but Cal State L.A. was able to maintain its slim lead. The Warriors had a 9-7 advantage in shots in the second half and Beigarten made two of his seven saves in the second period.

A long punt by Beigarten started the only scoring play of the game. Tobrant came up with the loose ball and was able to work his way past the Cal State Stanislaus defense. He then eluded Long and placed a shot just inside the near post in the 17th minute.

The Golden Eagles generated some good chances in the opening period, but the second half was more of a grind as Cal State Stanislaus was able to generate some pressure in the Cal State L.A. end of the field.

The Golden Eagle backline of Daniel Rodriguez, Nathan Castillo, Christhian Reyes and Dane Nielsen did a nice job of preventing top-notch attempts and Beigarten was able to do the rest for the shutout.

T.J. Perez had a match-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Andre Bissmark, Juan Ochoa and Sigifredo Torres had three each. Josue Barajas had four shots for Cal State Stanislaus.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a game at Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
