SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a rough outing in its California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener at Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles managed 11 hits and 10 runs, but that wasn't nearly enough in a 17-10 loss to the Otters on a windy day at Otter Sports Complex. With the wind blowing out, the two teams combined for 27 runs and 29 hits.
Cal State L.A. (13-14, 9-12 CCAA) rallied to tie the score three times, the final time at 10-10 in the top of the seventh inning. Cal State Monterey Bay (18-17, 11-14 CCAA) responded each time and scored four times in the bottom of the seventh and three times in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away.
Nick Rodarte hit a pair of home runs to lead the offense, while
Cliff Quick and
Daniel Duran drove in two runs each.
Scott Masik, Rodarte, Quick and
Joe Park each had two hits.
Chris Lopiccolo had three hits and four RBI to lead Cal State Monterey Bay. Brian Maggett had three hits, scored three times and drove in three, while leadoff hitter Danny Nelson had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two.
Chris Neifert allowed two runs and two runs over the final 3 1/3 innings to get the win for the Otters. He blanked the Golden Eagles over the final two innings. Rodarte, the third of five Cal State L.A. pitchers, got the loss.
Cal State L.A. fell behind, 2-0, in the first inning, but got single runs in the third and fourth innings to tie it for the first time. Park's RBI double made it 2-1 in the third and Rodarte's first home run of the game in the fourth tied it at 2-2.
The Golden Eagles trailed 8-2 heading into the sixth, but scored six times to tie it again. Rodarte led off with a solo home run, Duran delivered a two-run single to make it 8-5 and Quick's two-run single made it 8-7.
Manny Acosta drove in the tying run to make it 8-8.
Cal State Monterey Bay struck back for two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, but Cal State L.A. scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie it for the final time.
Brian Compton walked and scored on a triple by
Scott Masik and
Jeremy Weber's RBI groundout scored Masik to tie it.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay beginning at 11 a.m.
