Golden Eagles Hit Another Big Bump On The Road At UCSD

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team's road to a possible spot in the postseason take another hit on the road Friday night.

The Golden Eagles dropped their second straight game to conference-leading UC San Diego, falling by a 12-3 count in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Triton Ballpark. Cal State L.A. (22-18, 18-16 CCAA) slipped to seventh place in the conference with the loss and is one game out of fourth place.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 6-0 after four innings and 10-2 after five innings and were never able to mount a comeback. UC San Diego (28-18, 26-12 CCAA) had 12 hits and scored runs in five of the first six innings.

James Wharton went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Jeremy Weber was 2-5 with one run scored. David Arredondo went six innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs. Nick Rodarte pitched a scoreless inning of relief, while Jonathan Skura allowed two runs in his one inning of work.

Jeff Rauh pitched six strong innings to get the win for UC San Diego. He allowed five hits and two runs. Sean Rowan, Dean Kolodin and Justin Burns each pitched one inning of relief. Justin Rahn was 4-for-5 with two RBI, Danny Susdorf was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and Garrett Tuck and Sam Mitchell had two RBI each. Nick La Face was 1-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

The Tritons scored three runs in the first, one in the third and two in the fourth to take a quick 6-0 lead.

Cal State L.A. finally got on the board when Wharton delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fifth. Scott Masik was hit by a pitch and Weber doubled before Wharton's single.

Wharton also drove in the Golden Eagles' other run when he singled home Daniel Duran in the eighth.

Cal State L.A. will conclude its home schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against UC San Diego beginning at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor their 11 seniors in between games.
