Golden Eagles Battle Back For Split Against Broncos

POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team scored in only one of 16 innings in Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona, but it was enough to earn a split.

A grand slam home run by Joe Park was all Gabriel Asakura needed to beat the Broncos, 4-1, Saturday at Scolinos Field. Cal Poly Pomona won the opener, 6-0.

Cal State L.A. (21-16, 17-14 CCAA) had nine hits in the nightcap, but could only score in the second inning. Cal Poly Pomona (27-17, 19-16 CCAA) scored its only run on a double-steal in the first inning.

Asakura was dominant during the middle stretches of the game and retired 14 in a row at one point before allowing a two-out single in the sixth inning to Mike Santora. Asakura worked around two singles in the seventh inning and was helped by a big double play.

Cal State L.A.'s only scoring came in the second inning. Manny Acosta led off with a single and Jeremy Weber picked up a one-out single. Scott Masik reached on an infield single to load the bases and Park cleared them with his home run.

The Broncos were stymied in the opener by Cal Poly Pomona's Geoff Broussard, who tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout. It was only the second time this season that Cal State L.A. had been blanked.

The Golden Eagles managed only four hits, a double by Nick Rodarte and singles by Park, Duran and Cliff Quick. Broussard, who improved to 10-1, walked only one and struck out seven.

David Arredondo got the start for the Golden Eagles and gave up six hits and five runs in five innings of work. He walked one and struck out one. Rodarte allowed two hits and one run over the next two innings and Jonathan Skura pitched one scoreless inning for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the four-game series with Cal Poly Pomona with a single game on Sunday at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
