Golden Eagles Score In Ninth Inning To Edge Toros

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team needed a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Golden Eagles had the perfect batter at the plate.
 
Daniel Duran capped a productive night at the plate with a game-winning double to drive in Jeremy Weber and lift the Golden Eagles to a 6-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday night at Reeder Field. The Toros had rallied from a 5-1 deficit with three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie it.
 
Duran was 4-for-4 with four RBI in the game, one day after earning national Player of the Week honors from D2 Baseball News.
 
Cal State L.A. (8-3, 4-1 CCAA) picked up 13 hits in the game, including seven from Weber and Duran. Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-5, 1-4 CCAA) had 11 hits in the game, including seven in its final two at bats.
 
Cal State L.A. received a sparkling pitching outing from starter Ryan Santhon, who allowed just six hits and two earned runs in 7 2/3 strong innings. He walked one and struck out 11 and left with two outs in the eighth inning. Jacob Valenzuela gave up a run-scoring single before getting out the inning with a 5-4 lead, but then gave up the tying run in the ninth before getting out of a two-out, two-on jam.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills got a strong start from Sean Wardour, who went six innings and gave up five earned runs. He walked three and struck out eight. Hector Gomez blanked the Golden Eagles over the next two innings before getting touched for the winning run in the ninth.
 
Cal State L.A. took a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Golden Eagles got one in the first on a run-scoring single from Cliff Quick and got a two-run single from Duran in the second.
 
The Toros struck for a run in the fourth when Chris Allen doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Golden Eagles got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-1 lead. Manny Acosta singled in a run in the fifth to make it 4-1 and a sacrifice fly by Duran in the sixth made it 6-1.
 
The Toros took advantage of a throwing error in the eighth inning to score three times. Drew Rodela had a run-scoring double and Chris Vopinek had a run-scoring single in the inning.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills tied it at 5-5 in the ninth on a single to right by Rodela. Valenzuela got the final out on a fly out to set the stage for the quick Golden Eagle rally in the ninth.
 
Weber led off the inning with a single off Gomez' hand and, two pitches later, Duran laced a double to left-center to win the game.
 
The conference series will resume on Friday night with a game at Reeder Field beginning at 6 p.m.
