Golden Eagles Get Conference Win On Arvola's Late Goal

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got a clutch shot from senior Antti Arvola when it needed it most Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal Poly Pomona.

Arvola curved in a free kick from about 20 yards out following a Cal Poly Pomona yellow card to lift the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 win over the Broncos at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (7-3-1, 6-2-1 CCAA) kept pace in the CCAA South Division and remain one point behind first-place UC San Diego. The Tritons blanked Sonoma State, 2-0, in Rohnert Park on Friday.

Arvola's blast came in the 79th minute and the Golden Eagles were able to keep the Broncos at bay the rest of the way. Cal Poly Pomona (3-5-2, 1-5-2 CCAA) allowed more than one goal in a game for the first time this season.

Cal State L.A. had a 10-5 edge in shots and a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles, though, hand their hands full with the Broncos, whose stout defense kept them in the contest to the end. Cal Poly Pomona's Andrew Todd made two saves, while Cal State L.A.'s Waleed Cassis made three saves.

Both teams had good chances in the opening minutes of the game. Cal State L.A.'s Luis Trujillo had a header go just over the crossbar in the fifth minute and Cal Poly Pomona's Abraham Gomez had a free kick bounce off the post a few minutes later. Arvola had a golden opportunity in the 17th minute when he sent a rebound of a shot by Juan Ochoa just wide of the goal.

Arvola wouldn't be denied later. He helped put the Golden Eagles ahead in the 25th minute when he helped set up Adam Hughes for his first goal of the season. Halil Tozar started the scoring run when he back-heeled a pass to Arvola, who sent a through ball to Hughes. As Cal Poly Pomona's goalkeeper came out, Hughes was able to line a shot through his legs and into the goal.

The Broncos tied it up quickly in the second half. Matt Wright did the scoring honors when his shot from close range found the goal just inside the far post. Gomez started the play with a free kick into the box and David Carrillo got the ball to Wright. It was Wright's first goal of the season.

Rosario Bras sent a header just wide of the far post in the 52nd minute and Cassis made a nice save on a hard shot by Brandon Cortez 72nd minute.

The score remained tied with the Golden Eagles pressuring when a Cal Poly Pomona just outside the box resulted in a foul and a yellow card. Arvola took full advantage, curving a perfectly-placed shot around the Cal Poly Pomona wall and into the goal.

Cal State L.A. had three corner kicks down the stretch and successfully held the Broncos without a shot. for the rest of the contest.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game against San Francisco State on Sunday.
