Box Score LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was well aware that goals would be hard to come by in Friday's big California Collegiate Athletic Association battle against UC San Diego at Triton Field.
The Golden Eagles, though, struck early to grab the lead and went on to an important 1-0 victory over the Tritons.
Rosario Bras notched his seventh goal of the season just 1:02 into the match and Cal State L.A.'s sturdy defense made it stand up.
Cal State L.A. (9-3-1, 8-2-1 CCAA) won its third straight game and improved to 8-1-1 over its last 10 games. The only loss during that stretch was a 2-1 loss in double overtime in a game the Golden Eagles played a man down from early in the first half.
UC San Diego (7-3-2, 6-2-2 CCAA) entered the game allowing only four goals all season and the Tritons entered the contest with five consecutive shutouts and a scoreless streak of 502 minutes. The Tritons' goals against average of 0.34 was No. 2 in the nation and well under the conference record of 0.63.
Cal State L.A., though, has a pretty tough defense also and that showed in a tight battle on Friday. The Golden Eagles have now posted six shutouts, including a pair of 1-0 wins over UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles, who got a game-winner from
Antti Arvola in the second overtime of an even battle in Los Angeles on Sept. 14, got the game-decider early on Friday. Bras was able to knock a header into the top part of the goal off a cross from the left side of the field.
Erik Vargas and
Halil Tozar picked up the assists.
UC San Diego had a 10-6 edge in shots, although only a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Tritons had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, including three during a nervewracking stretch in the final 10 minutes of the game. Cal State L.A.'s defense held strong, though, and the Golden Eagles didn't allow a shot over the final nine minutes. In fact, it was Cal State L.A. pressuring in the final minute of the contest with a corner kick and shot by Tozar that went wide.
Cassis had a strong game in goal for the Golden Eagles and made three saves. Cameron Mcelfresh made one save for the Tritons.
A short-handed Cal State L.A. team also got strong performances from
Andy Lopez,
Daniel Rodriguez,
Juan Ochoa,
Christhian Reyes and
Pablo Nunez, all of whom played all 90 minutes on Friday.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 11:30 a.m.
