LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team finally broke through for a goal and it came just in time to salvage a tie with No. 23 Cal State Stanislaus Friday night at Jesse Owens Stadium.
The Golden Eagles got a game-tying goal from
Norie Pablo in the 83
rd minute and ultimately earned a 1-1 tie with the Warriors in an entertaining California Collegiate Athletic Association game. Both teams had excellent scoring chances during a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, but were forced to settle for a tie.
Cal State L.A. (2-2-1, 0-2-1), which was ranked 11th in the nation before a pair of 1-0 losses to nationally-ranked UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills last week dropped it from the rankings, had a 15-12 edge in shots and an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles, though, were unable to convert on any of those opportunities against Cal State Stanislaus (3-0-2, 2-0-1).
Millie Brown made seven saves for Cal State Stanislaus, while
Jessie Walworth made five saves for the Golden Eagles. The biggest save for Walworth was a spectacular one, denying a shot by Alexia Poon in the second overtime. Poon had split a pair of defenders and come in free, but a diving Walworth just got enough of the ball with her fingertips to keep it out of the goal.
The Golden Eagles were pressuring the Warriors as time was winding down and a cross by
Ayana Younge with five seconds left was dangerous, but Cal State Stanislaus was able to clear the ball away.
Brown also made a big save in extra time, diving to deflect a solid free kick by Cal State L.A.'s
Melina Barragan that seemed like it had a chance to end the game. Barragan had another hard shot off a free kick with one minute left in the first overtime, but it went just high.
The Golden Eagles, who had surrendered quick goals in the losses to UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills last week, looked to turn the tables on Cal State Stanislaus on Friday. The Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty kick in the opening minutes of the game after a hand ball in the box. Cal State L.A. initially thought it had scored, but it came after the whistle. The ball was placed for a penalty kick and a shot by
Janet Mendez bounced off the post and away, keeping the game scoreless.
Maddi Meaghan had an outstanding chance in the second half off a scramble following a corner kick, but a Cal State Stanislaus defender was able to clear the ball out of danger.
Cal State Stanislaus took a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute when Vanessa Cervantes sent a through ball to Jessica Cervantes, whose shot got past a diving Walworth. The Cal State L.A. goalkeeper was able to get her fingertips on it, but the ball trickled into the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
That advantage only lasted four minutes.
Natalie Martin sent a ball into the box and a racing Pablo was able to beat Brown to the ball and knock it into an empty net for her second goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Chico State.
