LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team ran a fastbreak to perfection in its thrilling overtime win over Cal State Stanislaus Friday night in Jesse Owens Stadium.
The Golden Eagles quickly countered a Cal State Stanislaus push thanks to a magnificent run by
Marvin Sandoval that led to
Rosario Bras' game-winning goal in Cal State L.A.'s 2-1 victory. Cal State L.A. (3-0-1, 2-0-1) took over first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division with the win.
After Cal State Stanislaus sent the ball deep into Cal State L.A. territory on a punt by goalkeeper Bill Hambelton, the Golden Eagles quickly gained possession and started the game-winning run. Sandoval took the ball and made a strong run through some Cal State Stanislaus defenders, eventually finding lots of open room on what turned out to be a 3-onf-1 break.
Sandoval then deftly got the ball to Bras running free on the left side. It was a smart decision as Bras notched his fourth goal of the season and lifted the Golden Eagles to victory.
It was a disappointing end to the game for Cal State Stanislaus (3-2, 1-2 CCAA), which battled Cal State L.A. on even terms through much of the game.
Timo Schwar got the Golden Eagles on the board in the 23
rd minute thanks to a beautiful through pass from
Jason Swope. Schwar got to the ball just in time to send it past Hambelton and into the Cal State Stanislaus goal.
The Warriors just missed getting the equalizer in the 42nd minute when a header by Manny Avila sailed just wide of the goal.
Cal State L.A.'s
Jordan Payne was stopped on a point-blank shot by an alert Hambelton just before halftime to keep the score at 1-0.
The Warriors got off to a quick start in the second half and promptly tied things up in the 50
th minute.
Nolan Holdridge sent a free kick into a crowd in the box and Jose Valazquez headed it in past Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Waleed Cassis.
Both teams had chances during the remainder of regulation. Payne had a couple of chances for the Golden Eagles, including a strong chance that was deflected nicely by Hambelton to prevent a goal.
Cal State Stanislaus had a chance go just wide in overtime and then got the ball deep again into Cal State L.A. territory, only to see the ball brought back quickly for the game-winning score.
Hambelton had four saves for the Warriors, while Cassis had two saves for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. had a 15-10 edge in shots, including a 3-1 edge in overtime.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Chico State beginning at 11:30 a.m.
