TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Cal State Stanislaus get off to a disappointing start on Friday.
The Golden Eagles lost the series opener, 7-3, Friday at Warrior Baseball Field and fell one game out of fourth place in a tightly-packed conference race. The top four teams will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Cal State L.A. (24-19, 18-15 CCAA) are currently in sixth place, one game back of Cal State San Bernardino (18-13 in conference) and Cal Poly Pomona (20-15 in conference). Sonoma State (19-13 in conference) is just one-half game ahead of the fourth-place teams.
The Golden Eagles managed eight hits against Cal State Stanislaus starter Andrew Stueve, but only two were for extra bases. Cal State L.A. scored twice in the fifth inning following a run-scoring triple by
Chad Nacapoy and a run-scoring single by
Elliott Russell to tie the game at 2-2, but the Warriors (21-17, 13-16 CCAA) scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Colton Beatty had four hits to lead the Warriors, including a go-ahead home run in the fifth. He also drove in a run in the eighth inning.
Nacapoy had two hits for the Golden Eagles. #Manny Acosta# added a run-scoring single in the ninth.
Kamakani Usui started for the Golden Eagles and allowed six hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Thomas Landeros finished up and gave up four hits and three runs over 3 2/3 innings.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held that advantage until the fifth.
Chris Matzner started the Golden Eagle rally with a two-out single and he scored on a triple by Nacapoy. Russell then reached on an infield hit to drive in Nacapoy and tie the game.
The Warriors, though, regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on Beatty's two-run home run. Cal State Stanislaus added two runs in the seventh to make it 6-2. Beatty singled and scored on a triple by Vince Hungerford, who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Medeiros. Back-to-back hit batters in the eighth preceeded Beatty's run-scoring single in the eighth that made it 7-2.
The Golden Eagles finished the scoring in the ninth when
Noe Flores doubled and scored on a single by Acosta.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus beginning at noon.
