Golden Eagles Drop Series Finale To Chico State, 8-2

Box Score

CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team fell behind early and never recovered in a California Collegiate Athletic Association series finale against Chico State.

The Golden Eagles permitted four runs in the first inning and the Wildcats went on to an 8-2 win Sunday at Nettleton Stadium. Cal State L.A. (23-17, 18-14 CCAA) slipped into a tie for fourth place in the conference after losing three of the four games in the series.

After Cal State L.A. pitchers limited the WIldcats (25-8, 19-7 CCAA) to just two runs in a doubleheader split on Saturday, Chico State bunched together six hits to score four times in the first inning on Sunday. The Golden Eagles, who had just five hits on Sunday, were able to cut the lead in half with runs in the second and fifth innings, but Chico State got one run back in the fifth, one more in the seventh and two in the eighth to put the game away.

Manny Acosta had two hits and scored a run for Cal State L.A., while Cliff Quick, Brett Whalen and Noe Flores also had hits.

Thomas Landeros allowed only one unearned run over four innings of solid relief for the Golden Eagles.

Adrian Bringas was 4-for-5 with two RBI for Chico State, while Jackson Evans was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Nick Baker allowed four hits and two runs over six innings to get the win for the Wildcats. Stephen Thompson blanked the Golden Eagles over the final two innings while striking out three.

Cal State L.A. got its first run in the second inning when Whalen walked, stole second and scored when Flores reached on an error. The Golden Eagles got their final run in the fifth when Acosta singled, moved to third on a single by Flores and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Nacapoy.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home non-conference game against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 6 p.m.
