Game 2 Box

CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team limited Chico State's potent offense to just two runs on Saturday, yet had to settle for a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader split.

The Golden Eagles took the opener, 5-1, but were unable to push across a run in a 1-0 defeat in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (23-16, 18-13 CCAA) remains in fourth place in the conference.

David Arredondo was dazzling in the opener, limiting the conference-leading Wildcats to just four hits over 7 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven while improving to 4-2. Jacob Valenzuela worked the final 1 1/3 innings and picked up his fourth save. He got a groundout against the only batter he faced in the eighth and then got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth with two outs to end it.

Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Cliff Quick. Joe Park walked, took second on a sacrifice by Chris Matzner, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Quick's fly ball.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 4-0 in the seventh. Brian Compton doubled, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Whalen and scored on a single by Manny Acosta. After Noe Flores doubled, Chad Nacapoy singled in two runs to put the game out of reach.

Chico State got its lone run in the eighth, but the Golden Eagles got that back in the top of the ninth on a run-scoring double by Nacapoy that drove in Acosta.

Acosta, Flores and Nacapoy had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, who outhit the Wildcats, 8-6.

In the nightcap, Gabriel Asakura pitched another gem, only this time he suffered his first loss of the season. Chico State scraped together the only run of the game in the fifth by bunching together three hits and avoiding a potential inning-ending double play.

The Golden Eagles had two on with one out in the seventh, but were unable to score.

Asakura pitched six innings and was credited with his second straight complete game.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the four-game series with Chico State with a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
