CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team endured a horrific opener in its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Chico State.
The Golden Eagles were pounded, 15-1, Friday night at Nettleton Stadium in a game where absolutely nothing went right. Cal State L.A. was outhit, 20-6, and also committed five errors.
The Wildcats scored three times in the first, seven times in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth. Cal State L.A. averted a shutout with a run in the ninth inning.
Cal State L.A. (22-15, 17-12 CCAA) slipped into fourth place in the CCAA with the loss, while Chico State (22-7, 17-6 CCAA) retains its conference lead.
Wally Goodline took the loss for the Golden Eagles after allowing 17 hits and nine earned runs in five innings.
Elliott Russell allowed only two hits and an unearned run in two innings of relief and
Adan Cabrales worked a scoreless eighth inning.
Chris Matzner had two hits for the Golden Eagles.
Chico State's Kevin Brahney blanked the Golden Eagles on three hits over seven innings to pick up his first win of the season. He walked one and struck out eight. Adrian Bringas was 5-for-6 with four RBI and Shane Kroker added three RBI.
Michael Vinyard had the lone RBI for the Golden Eagles.
David Compton was hit by a pitch with two outs in the ninth, took second on a single by Matzner and scored on Vinyard's hit.
Cal State L.A. will continue the series in Chico with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
