Golden Eagles Record Second Straight Victory Over Tritons

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team rallied for its win on Thursday; the Golden Eagles led from start to finish for their victory on Friday.

The Golden Eagles scored twice in the first inning and never trailed in a 7-4 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over UC San Diego Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (19-11, 14-8 CCAA) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win on Thursday, but got an early advantage and kept it Friday against the two-time defending CCAA champs.

David Arredondo pitched a masterful game, going 8 2/3 strong innings before giving way to Thomas Landeros in the ninth. Landeros, facing the tying run at the plate, got the only batter he faced in quick order to post his fifth save.

Arredondo allowed only one earned run through the first eight innings before tiring in the ninth. He got two quick outs sandwiched around a hit batter, but UC San Diego (20-10, 13-7 CCAA) prevented him from picking up a complete game by recording three straight hits. That brought on Landeros to finish the game.

The Golden Eagles got big days from the Compton twins. Brian Compton drove in three runs with a two-run double in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. David Compton smacked a solo home run in the sixth to give the Golden Eagles a 6-2 advantage.

UC San Diego picked up 11 hits in the game, including three from Aaron Bauman and two each from Kyle Saul and Danny Susdorf.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Chad Nacapoy doubled and moved to third on a single by Cliff Quick. Brian Compton drilled a two-out double to left center to drive in both runs.

UC San Diego cut the deficit in half with an unearned run in the third. An errant pickoff throw at second base allowed Saul, who had doubled, to come around and score.

The Golden Eagles, though, got some breathing room in the fifth off UC San Diego starter Guido Knudson. Joe Park reached on an infield single with one out and moved to second on single by Nacapoy. Quick singled to load the bases and Noe Flores was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Nacapoy scored on a balk to make it 4-1 and Brian Compton drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.

After UC San Diego got a run in the top of the sixth, David Compton led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to make it 6-2.

The Golden Eagles made it 7-2 in the seventh with an unearned run. Brian Compton scored when Brian Moon reached base because of an error.

Arredondo carried the big lead into the ninth, but ran into trouble when he hit Scott Liske with a pitch with one out. After getting the second out, Saul doubled in a run and Susdorf singled in a run to make it 7-4. Bauman singled to end the day for Arredondo, but Landeros recorded a fly ball out to end it.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the four-game series with a  doubleheader at UC San Diego on Saturday beginning at noon.
