Golden Eagles Fall For Second Straight Day To Coyotes

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team came up short for the second straight day against Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Reeder Field.

The Golden Eagles allowed eight runs over the final two innings and lost to the Coyotes, 12-6, Friday afternoon at Reeder Field. The game was delayed by rain for about 25 minutes in the bottom of the sixth inning, but play resumed and Cal State L.A. (9-5, 4-2 CCAA) lost its second straight conference game.

It was a day of missed opportunities for the Golden Eagles, who stranded 14 baserunners in the game. Cal State San Bernardino was much more efficient cashing in its offensive chances, helped by home runs from David Silvas and Eric Dow. Cal State San Bernardino collected 15 hits against four Cal State L.A. pitchers, while Cal State L.A. had 10 hits, nine of them singles.

Joe Park, Cliff Quick and Chad Nacapoy had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

Dow had two hits and four RBI to lead Cal State San Bernardino (5-5, 3-1 CCAA). Brandon Day had two hits and three RBI, while Silvas, Mike Newell, Erik Ornelas and Ethan Chapman also had two hits each.

The game started out as a pretty good pitching battle between Cal State L.A.'s Wally Goodline and Cal State San Bernardino's Cory Caruso. Goodline allowed eight hits and four runs in his six innings, while Caruso allowed six hits and only one earned run in 5 1/3 innings.

The Coyotes held a 4-2 lead after seven innings before getting a key two-run home run by Dow to make it 6-2. The Coyotes then scored six more runs in the ninth, while the Golden Eagles struck back for four runs in the bottom of the ninth before leaving the bases loaded to end it.

Cal State San Bernardino got a two-out, two-run single in the second inning from Dow to take a 2-0 lead and then made it 3-0 in the fourth on a run-scoring double by Chapman.

A solo home run by Silvas leading off the fifth made it 4-0.

Cal State L.A. got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a run-scoring single by Quick. In the sixth, the Golden Eagles loaded the bases when Chris Matzner was hit by a pitch, Noe Flores walked and David Compton singled. The game was then delayed by rain and when play resumed, Manny Acosta greeted reliever Trevor Longfellow with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

Dow's two-out, two-run home run in the eighth made it 6-2. The Coyotes then got a three-run double by Day to break things open in the ninth. Ornelas doubled in a run and Matt Haney singled in two runs before the inning was over.

Cal State L.A. scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Matzner singled in two runs, Michael Vinyard singled in a run and Elliott Russell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. Haney then came on in relief and got the final out with the bases loaded to end the game.

The two teams are scheduled to complete the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at San Bernardino's Fiscalini Field.
