Golden Eagles Have To Settle For 1-1 Tie With Sonoma State

Box Score

SANTA ROSA – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had its chances, but ultimately had to settle for a frustrating tie with Sonoma State Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game between two postseason contenders.

The Golden Eagles surrendered a penalty kick goal with less than two minutes to play in regulation and had to settle for a 1-1 tie with the Seawolves at Triones Fields. The game was moved from Seawolf Soccer Stadium because of heavy midweek rain in the area.

The Golden Eagles (6-1-4, 4-1-4 CCAA) slip three points behind South Division co-leaders Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona after the tie. Sonoma State (6-4-1, 5-3-1) fell out of first place in the North Division with the tie. Both Cal State L.A. and Sonoma State have 16 points in conference play.

Cal State L.A. took the lead in the 71st minute when Jason Swope took a cross from Marvin Sandoval and knocked it into the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. The assist was the fifth of the season for Sandoval, who leads the team in that department.

The Seawolves got the equalizer with 1:56 remaining in regulation when Kelly Davila converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles played both overtime periods with an extra man after a Sonoma State player drew a red card for throwing a punch and was ejected in the final minute of regulation. Cal State L.A. was all over Sonoma State in the two extra periods and nearly won the game in the 104th minute when Swope hit the crossbar with a scoring attempt.

Cal State L.A. also drew iron in the first half when a bid by Jordan Payne hit the crossbar in the 40th minute.

The Golden Eagles finished with a 21-18 advantage in shots, including a 12-6 edge in shots on goal. Waleed Cassis made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Taylor Jones made 11 saves for Sonoma State, including four in the first overtime period. Cal State L.A. had a 7-2 edge in shots in the two overtime periods, including a 5-2 advantage in the first OT period.

It was a physical game with 47 fouls, seven yellow cards and one red card issued. The Golden Eagles picked up a season-high five yellow cards in the contest, while Sonoma State had a pair of yellow cards and the one red.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at Humboldt State on Sunday.
