Golden Eagles Win To Wrap Up CCAA South Division TItle

HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team left nothing to chance Sunday in its regular-season finale at Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 first-half lead and went on to a 5-1 victory over the Pioneers in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Pioneer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (12-1-5, 10-1-5 CCAA) wins the CCAA South Division title with 35 points, the same amount as North Division champion Chico State. Cal State L.A. won the CCAA South Division outright after Cal State Dominguez Hills lost later Sunday at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Cal State L.A. will face Cal State Stanislaus in a first-round conference tournament game next Friday at 7 p.m. at Cal State Stanislaus.

Cal State L.A. advances to the CCAA Championship Tournament for the fifth time in the past six years and captured its third South Divison crown over that same time span.

The Golden Eagles also extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games.

Rosario Bras, Antti Arvola, Jason Swope, Derek Faulkner and Jordan Payne all scored goals for the Golden Eagles. Nicolas Assad had two assists.

Cal State L.A. had a 12-9 edge in shots, while Cal State East Bay had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Waleed Cassis made three first-half saves for the Golden Eagles, while Jose Martinez finished up in goal in the second half.

Bras opened the scoring just 4:22 into the contest after accepting a pass from midfield from Assad and knocking a shot inside the far post for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Arvola made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when he scored on a penalty kick for his sixth goal of the season and Swope scored his ninth goal of the season in the 24th minute with an assist from Bras. Bras sent in a cross and Swope found himself alone against the goalkeeper and didn't miss.

Faulkner scored his third goal of the season in the 37th minute to make it 4-0. Assad sent in a perfectly-placed pass that Faulkner sent into a wide-open goal.

Sam Duenas got Cal State East Bay on the board in the 55th minute when he got to a cross before Martinez and scored in the 55th minute.

Payne wrapped up the scoring in the 80th minute when he was one-on-one with the goalkeeper after a pass from Arvola and notched his third goal of the season.
