LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team made it two shutout wins in two games with another outstanding performance Saturday against Hawaii Hilo.
The No. 11 Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals in the second half to subdue the Vulcans, 2-0, Saturday night in University Stadium. Cal State LA (2-0), which beat Fresno Pacific on Thursday, recorded back-to-back 2-0 wins.
Cal State LA had some strong chances in the latter stages of the first half, but went into the break scoreless. The Golden Eagles finally broke through with an own goal in the 57th minute to take a 1-0 lead and then got a goal from
Emiliano Gutierrez in the 82nd minute for the 2-0 win.
Brayden McClelland made three saves for the Golden Eagles for the team's second straight shutout.
Cal State LA had a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. Paul Waschkau made seven saves in goal for the Vulcans, including brilliant stops in the first half on bids by
Alex Mendez and
Jose Lopez and back-to-back saves on Mendez and
Felix Alverdale in the second half that kept the score at 1-0.
Alverdale had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Mendez,
Geovanni Antuna and
Jose Lopez had two shots each.
Cal State LA had more jump in the second half and finally broke through with an inadvertant assist from the Vulcans.
Johnny Gonzalez made a great play just outside the box and sent in a dangerous cross that was accidentally knocked into the net by a Hawaii Hilo defender in the 57th minute.
Mendez had a sensational opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 78th minute with a hard shot, but Waschkau made a sprawling save. Alverdale was the first to the rebound, but Waschkau stopped his point-blank attempt, too, to keep it at 1-0.
Cal State LA eventually made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute. Antuna set up the play with a nifty pass back to Gutierrez, who drilled a shot inside the far post for his first goal at Cal State LA.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Seattle Pacific at 7 p.m.
