LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team got its 2025 season off to a winning start Thursday with a shutout victory at home over Fresno Pacific.
The No. 11 Golden Eagles got a goal in each half to overcome a stern challenge from the Sunbirds, who will be joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association in the 2026-27 season.
Geovanni Antuna scored the first goal of his Cal State LA career in the first half to open the scoring and
Erick Alamo made it 2-0 in the second half with the third goal of his Golden Eagle career.
That was more than enough offensive support for
Brayden McClelland, who made three saves in the first game of his Cal State LA career for his first career shutout.
Elmer Carballo made 10 saves for the Sunbirds, five in each half. Lucas Ribeiro had a pair of shots and was a dangerous threat throughout the match.
Cal State LA enjoyed a 17-12 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sergio Vega had a match-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Johnny Gonzalez had three shots in his Cal State LA debut.
It was a new-look Cal State LA team with four starters and 13 players overall making their Golden Eagle debuts on Thursday.
One of the veterans, Antuna, in his third year with the program, opened the scoring in the 28th minute.
Emiliano Gutierrez sent a beautiful corner kick into the box and Antuna elevated and headed in a spectacular strike to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Cal State LA opened the second half with a big push and nearly made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when Gonzalez and
Ignacio Moreno had back-to-back scoring chances go off the crossbar. Gonzalez had the first bid and Moreno's rebound attempt bounced off the bar and out.
Just more than a minute later, though, Alamo was on the end of a pair of passes from Gonzalez and
Jose Lopez and his left-footed shot from inside the box found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Hawaii Hilo beginning at 7 p.m.
