No. 1 Golden Eagles Suffer Their First Loss Of The Season

Box Score

POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, saw a lot of streaks come to a sudden halt Friday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Golden Eagles allowed their first two goals of the season and ultimately lost for the first time this season, 2-0, Friday to Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State L.A. (5-1, 4-1 CCAA) had won its first five games of the season by shutout and had a scoreless string of 486 minutes snapped by the Broncos.

The Golden Eagles were quick out of the gates and put immediate pressure on the Broncos, but were unable to score. Cal State L.A. had only three shots in the opening half and two of them came in the first 15 minutes. Joe Davis and Taylor Rivas both had shots on goal, but the Golden Eagles then went nearly 30 minutes without a shot until Brennan Brodersen sent a shot wide in the 42nd minute.

Cal State L.A. gave up its first goal of the season in the 37th minute when Anthony Salcedo scored with an assist from Luis Gonzalez.

Gonzalez made it 2-0 early in the second half with a goal, but he also seemingly opened the door for the Golden Eagles when he was sent off in the 51st minute. Even with the man advantage, though, Cal State L.A. struggled for offensive opportunities.

The Golden Eagles managed only seven more shots in the second half and finished the game with a 10-7 advantage. James Irwin made one save for Cal State L.A. in goal.

Cal State L.A. will return to action Sunday with another road game, this one at Cal State San Bernardino.
