HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team showed no signs of a letup in its California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles won their second straight conference game and third straight decision overall by blanking Cal State East Bay, 6-0, Sunday at Pioneer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (3-0, 2-0 CCAA) jumped out to a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Cal State L.A., ranked 23rd in the country, was coming off a 3-1 win over No. 6 UC San Diego on Friday. The Golden Eagles have outscored their first three opponents, 12-2.
Gabbi Segall and
Lisa Ohberg each had two goals and one assist to lead the offensive charge for the Golden Eagles.
Liz Franco, the CCAA's Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2009, scored her first goal of the season and added two assists, while
Ann Marie Tangorra scored her fourth goal of the season and also added an assist.
Jessie Walworth and
Jessica Gerski combined for the Golden Eagles' first shutout of the season. Walworth made three saves in the first 66:50 of the contest, while Gerski made one save over the final 23:10.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 17-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 edge in the first half. The Golden Eagles had a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Franco put the Golden Eagles on the board just 1:16 into the game. Tangorra and
Marissa Pickett had the assists.
Tangorra made it 2-0 in the 28th minute when she accepted a pass from Franco and knocked in a shot from about 12 yards out.
Cal State L.A. added two more goals before halftime. Ohberg scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Segall off a corner kick in the 30th minute and Segall scored with an assist from Franco in the 37th minute. Segall beat the Cal State L.A. goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.
Ohberg scored her second goal of the game a little more than 10 minutes into the second half with an assist from
Ayana Younge and Segall wrapped up the scoring with another one-on-one break against the goalkeeper after a pass from Ohberg.
Cal State L.A. will return to action in its first home game of the season next Friday against San Francisco State.
