Golden Eagles Open Season With Scoreless Draw

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team battled visiting Western Oregon to a 0-0 tie on Thursday in the Golden Eagles' 2025 season opener at University Stadium.

The Golden Eagles and Wolves turned in a defensive masterpiece in the draw with both defenses limiting quality chances throughout the contest. Cal State LA had a 10-6 edge in shots, including a 5-1 advantage in the first half. Cal State LA also enjoyed a 9-2 edge in corner kicks with a 3-0 advantage in the first half and a 6-2 advantage in the second half.

In fact, the best scoring chance for the Golden Eagles came in the opening half after a scrum in the box following a corner kick. Jacqueline Marin got off a shot that was blocked from point-blank range in the box.

Western Oregon goalkeeper Isabella Lopez made five saves, while Cal State LA goalkeeper Kendyl Sumlin was active in the box, but didn't make a save in her Golden Eagle debut.

There were plenty of new faces for the Golden Eagles, who featured five players making their Cal State LA debuts on the field and 13 players overall.

Lindsey Metcalfe and Samantha Padilla were the only field players to stay on the field for all 90 minutes on Thursday.

Bailey Martinez and Marin had two shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Olivia Boger had two shots to lead Western Oregon.

Cal State LA celebrated its eight seniors - Lindsey Metcalfe, Samantha Valencia, Genesis Lopez, Sofia Orozco, Jacqueline Marin, Syra Valdez, Delia Bocanegra and Brianna Marquez - in pregame ceremonies.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at Westmont at 4 p.m.
