WESTMONT -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team shook off a slow start and rebounded nicely in the second half for a non-conference win at Westmont.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the seventh minute, but struck back for a pair of goals in the second half to beat the Warriors, 2-1, Saturday at Thorrington Field. Cal State LA (1-0-1), coming off a 0-0 draw with Western Oregon on Thursday to open its season, tied the game just 42 seconds into the second half and got the game-winner in the 77th minute.
Jacqueline Marin scored her first career goal for the Golden Eagles in the opening minute of the second half, finishing a pass from
Delia Bocanegra. Bocanegra, Cal State LA's leading scorer in 2024, got around Westmont defenders and sent a pass into the box to Marin, who one-timed it beautifully into the net for the tying score.
Bocanegra then picked up her second assist when she set up
Sofia Orozco for the game-winner in the 77th minute. This time, she raced through a pair of defenders and sent a ball to Orozco, who got in on a 1v1 with the goalkeeper and shot it in for the go-ahead goal.
The goal was Orozco's first of the season and second of her Cal State LA career.
Bocanegra picked up the first multi-assist game of her Cal State LA career.
Goalkeeper
Kendyl Sumlin made four saves to pick up the first win of her Cal State LA career.
Westmont had a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Point Loma at 6:30 p.m.
