LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team came up short Wednesday night in a hard-fought game against Point Loma.
The Golden Eagles had some chances, but the Sea Lions got a goal in each half to post a 2-0 victory in University Stadium. Cal State LA (1-1-1) was looking for its first win over Point Loma (1-1-1) since 2014. The Golden Eagles had earned ties with the Sea Lions in each of the past two seasons.
Point Loma began to sustain pressure in the Golden Eagles' end of the field and it eventually paid off for the Sea Lions in the 42nd minute. Juliet Thrapp was able to head a ball in traffic ahead to Maddy Saruwatari, who placed the ball inside the near post for the goal.
Point Loma got its second goal in the 84th minute when Emma Rogers converted from right in front of the goal-line for the goal. Cal State LA goalkeeper
Kendyl Sumlin made a valiant effort to keep the ball out, making an initial stop on a shot by Alyssa Ketcham, but the ball wound up by her feet and Rogers was eventually able to put it in with assists from Kylie Garcia and Emma Majors.
In between the two goals, Cal State LA had a pair of outstanding chances, both from the foot of
Jacqueline Marin. First, she rifled a shot that appeared destined to tie the game in the 68th minute, but Point Loma goalkeeper Julia Pinnell made a diving stop to deflect it out for a corner kick.
Then, in the 71st minute, Marin had a strong bid from distance that just went over the crossbar.
Point Loma had a 13-7 advantage in shots and both teams had three corner kicks.
Marin had three of Cal State LA's seven shots, while
Itzel Carbajal,
Peytyn Mize,
Bailey Martinez and
Delia Bocanegra had one shot each. Sumlin had a season-high five saves.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Vanguard at 11 a.m.
