Box Score COSTA MESA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had its best five minutes of the season and recorded an impressive win at Vanguard.
The Golden Eagles broke open a scoreless tie with three goals in less than five minutes of the first half and went on to a 3-1 win over the Lions on Saturday at the Vanguard Soccer Complex. Cal State LA (2-1-1) bounced back nicely from a hard-fought loss against Point Loma on Thursday and reached a season-high in goals.
Jacqueline Marin opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a shot into the top-left corner of the goal in the 35th minute. It was Marin's second goal of the season.
Kristin Mijares made it 2-0 in the 39th minute with her first career goal at Cal State LA. She took a pass from
Delia Bocanegra and knocked a shot inside the right post.
Then, just 40 seconds later, Bocanegra made it 3-0 with her first goal of the season and the sixth of her Cal State LA career. The assist on the Mijares goal was her team-leading third of the season and she leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with five points.
Rachel Penick scored the lone goal for Vanguard (1-2) on a penalty kick goal in the 58th minute.
Kendyl Sumlin made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA had an 11-7 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State LA will return home for its next match on Thursday against Biola at 7 p.m.
