HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its final four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series of the season off to a rocky start.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a grand slam home run in the eighth inning and lost to Cal State East Bay, 9-7, Friday at Pioneer Field. Cal State L.A. (18-28, 16-21 CCAA) had tied the game at 5-5 with four runs in the top of the eighth, but the Pioneers (20-29-1, 13-24) CCAA) got a grand slam home run from James McShane and then held off a Cal State L.A. rally in the ninth.
Joe Park had two hits and two RBI for the Golden Eagles, while
Sam Wiley and
Chris Matzner had two hits each.
Mario Ramirez and
Max Moya scored two runs each.
Cal State L.A. left 10 runners on base and was outhit, 12-9.
Wally Goodline pitched 7 1/3 innings for the Golden Eagles, but ran into trouble in the eighth, loading the bases with just one out. McShane greeted Cal State L.A. reliever
Matt Stropoli with a grand slam home run on a 1-0 pitch to give the Pioneers the lead.
The Golden Eagles rallied for two runs in the ninth to cut the deficit to 9-7, but Devin Gregg got out of further trouble to record the win.
Cal State East Bay starter Matt McCormick carried a shutout and a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning when Moya singled and scored on a two-out single by Park. Cal State L.A. then struck for four runs in the eighth to tie it. Ramirez walked and came around to score on an error and
Brendan McQuaid singled in a run to make it 5-3 and another run scored on a throwing error. Park then singled in
Jesus Campos to tie the game.
After falling behind by four runs, the Golden Eagles got two runs in the ninth.
Cliff Quick was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and another run scored on a sacrifice fly by Campos.
The two teams will continue the season-ending series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
