Golden Eagles Lose Both Ends Of Saturday Doubleheader

Game 1 Box

Game 2 Box

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team endured a rough day at the ballpark Saturday.

The Golden Eagles surrendered 31 runs in a pair of games and were swept by Sonoma State, 20-15 and 11-3 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (17-27, 15-20 CCAA) has now lost six straight games, all at home.

Sonoma State (23-24, 16-19 CCAA) belted seven home runs in the doubleheader and pounded out 33 hits. Cal State L.A. tried to keep pace in the opener and had 19 hits and, after falling behind 10-2, actually brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning before being retired.

The Seawolves jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the nightcap and went on to the sweep. Cal State L.A.'s depleted pitching staff retired the Seawolves without a run in only four of the 16 innings played on Saturday.

Matt Miraldi was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and four runs batted in for the Golden Eagles in the opener, while Joe Park was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. Cliff Quick had three hits and three runs scored.

Sonoma State got a big game from Cameron Cook, who was 3-for-5 with a home run and six runs batted in. Joey Parigi hit a pair of home runs, including one to lead off the game for the Seawolves. Parigi was 4-for-6 with four runs scored. Kyle Jones also had a home run and was 3-for-5 with five runs scored and five RBI. Max Shupe had the other home run for the Seawolves.

Mario Ramirez had a home run for the Golden Eagles.

Robby White, the second of four Sonoma State pitchers, went four innings and allowed seven hits and four runs to get the win. Jarrod Dumont got the Seawolves out of further trouble in the eighth when Cal State L.A. scored five times to pull to within 17-15. Dumont got the final five outs of the game to record the save.

In the nightcap, Jones slugged a grand slam just four batters into the game to stake the Seawolves to a quick 4-0 lead. The Seawolves got another run before Brendan McQuaid came on in relief to get Cal State L.A. out of the opening frame.

With their pitching staff depleted, Cal State L.A. turned to position players McQuaid (second baseman), Jesus Campos (shortstop), Chris Matzner (third baseman), Max Moya (first baseman) and Miraldi (outfielder) to get through the game. Matzner tossed a scoreless inning of relief, while Campos gave up only a groundball single, a bloop single and an unearned run while finishing up the fourth inning.

Sonoma State starter Thomas Lee had a solid start. He surrendered nine hits, but only three runs while going all seven innings. Jones had five more RBI to give him 10 for the doubleheader.

Miraldi had two more hits in the nightcap for the Golden Eagles and two more runs scored. Campos also had two hits.

Cal State L.A. stranded 12 runners in the opener and 10 more in the nightcap.

The two teams will conclude the four-game conference series on Sunday at Reeder Field. The Golden Eagles will honor their seven seniors in pre-game ceremonies.
