LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had its chances, but squandered most of them Friday night in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles stranded 14 runners on base and were unable to hold off Sonoma State in an 8-6 loss to the Seawolves in 10 innings at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (17-25, 15-18 CCAA) was mathematically eliminated from CCAA Championship Tournament consideration with the loss.
Cal State L.A. got a solid starting pitching performance from
Wally Goodline, who gave up six hits and only two earned runs through seven innings. He left the game with a 5-4 lead, but Sonoma State got single runs in the eighth and ninth innings and then won it with two runs in the 10
th inning.
The game featured half of the field of the 2009 CCAA Championship Tournament, although neither squad will make it in 2010. Sonoma State (21-24, 14-19 CCAA) was eliminated last week.
Mario Ramirez,
Sam Wiley and
Joe Park had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, while Randy Wells was 3-for-5 with three runs scored for Sonoma State. Kyle Jones also had three hits for the Seawolves.
Jarrod Dumont got out of jams in the ninth and 10
th innings to get the win for Sonoma State. He got
Jordan Castro to pop out with runners on second and third in the ninth inning and then struck out Wiley and
Max Moya with the bases loaded in the 10
th inning to end it.
Cal State L.A. took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning after RBI singles by Park and
Matt Miraldi broke a 2-2 tie. Sonoma State took advantage of a throwing error to score twice in the sixth to tie it. One run scored on the error and Brian Wright's sacrifice fly tied the game.
The Golden Eagles took a 5-4 lead in the seventh when
Chris Matzner doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Moya. Sonoma State, though, tied it in the eighth on a fielder's choice by Wright and took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth on a run-scoring single by Wells.
Cal State L.A., though, tied it in the bottom of the ninth when Ramirez singled and scored on a double by Wiley. After Moya struck out,
Cliff Quick drew a walk and the runners advanced on a grounder to first by
Jesus Campos. The inning ended when Castro popped up a 3-1 pitch to third.
Sonoma State struck for two runs in the 10th to win it. Joey Parigi singled in the go-ahead run and Wright scored on a wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles then failed to score in the bottom of the inning despite loading the bases with only one out.
The two teams will continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
