LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal Poly Pomona off to a solid start Thursday night.
Wally Goodline tossed seven strong innings, the Cal State L.A. offense collected 12 hits and the Golden Eagles beat the Broncos, 9-4, at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (14-16, 12-9 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Goodline allowed eight hits and only two earned runs while improving to 4-1 on the season. He walked only one and struck out seven. #J.R. Bromberg# finished up and gave up two hits and an unearned run in two innings. He walked two and struck out four.
Travis Kelly worked 5 1/3 innings for the Broncos (17-17, 9-12 CCAA) and suffered the loss. He gave up nine hits and six earned runs. Ryan Dunn and Jordan Whitman each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Cal Poly Pomona.
Stephen Gonzalez, Robert Palmer and Manny Navarro had two hits each for the Broncos.
The Broncos scored an unearned run in the top of the first to take a quick lead, but the Golden Eagles tied it in the second with an unearned run. Quick delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Moya.
Cal State L.A. took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Quick singled in Campos, but the Broncos tied it in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Tyson Edwards.
The Golden Eagles then struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Ramirez started the inning with a home run and Wiley and
Matt Miraldi followed with back-to-back doubles to produce a run. Miraldi later scored on a squeeze bunt by Campos to make it 5-2.
The Broncos got one back in the sixth when Marcus Makia doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, but Cal State L.A. tacked on four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-3 edge. Wiley singled in one run, Ramirez scored another on a wild pitch,
Jordan Castro singled in a run and Campos singled home the final run.
Cal State L.A. will continue the series with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday beginning at 6 p.m.
